You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

Write a letter to the manager to apologise for being late for work many times before.

  • Describe why you were late.

  • Describe the problem.

  • What steps will you take to avoid in future.

Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

SAMPLE ANSWER: Word count: 163 Student: Ken from Japan Band Score: 6.5

I think the writing is good but I feel the student could have answered the question better by suggesting ways to avoid being late completely. The answer and the examples you use are important for the Task Achievement section of the marking criteria.

Dear sir or Madam,

I am writing to apologise to you for my being late to work frequently. I understand that the trouble which comes from my delay is huge and disturbing other co-workers.

I usually take a train and a ferry to come to work but transport sometimes does not work as I expect because of weather problems or traffic issues. The ferry departs every thirty minutes and if I miss one I have to wait for a long time until the next one.

As a suggestion to solve the problem, I will stay at work for some extra time before finishing to catch up on my work. That will help to prevent other workers from doing my work cause by my delay. I will also push myself to get traffic and weather information as fast as I can to avoid being late.

I am really sorry for the problems I have caused and thank you for understanding.

Yours faithfully,

Ken Japan.
