Education is a very important topic in IELTS because it features in both the essay questions and the speaking test. A very common question in speaking is: "are you working or studying at the moment?" followed by another question: "tell me about your studies." I will put a list of essay questions and a list of speaking test questions below for you to practice. I will also include a wide range of reading materials and some videos for you to practice your skills and hopefully improve your knowledge and vocabulary on this particular topic.


In some countries, young people are encouraged to take a gap year so they can work or travel between finishing high school and starting university studies. 

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decide to do this. 

The government should allocate more funding to teaching sciences rather than other subjects in order for a country to develop and progress. 

To what extent do you agree? 

Some people believe that children should not be given homework every day, while others believe that they must get homework every day in order to be successful at school. 

Discuss both sides and give your opinion. 

The role of education is to prepare children for the modern world. Schools should cut art and music out of the curriculum so that children can focus on useful subjects such as information technology.

Education should be accessible to people of all economic backgrounds. All levels of education, from primary to tertiary education, should be free. 

To what extent do you agree with this opinion? 

The gap between education in rich countries and education in poorer countries is a growing concern. 

What solutions can you suggest to deal with this situation? 

Some schools are very strict about their school uniforms and the appearance of their pupils, while other schools have a very relaxed code. 

What are the advantages and disadvantages of children having a school uniform?
