AITSL's teacher migration skills assessment is separate from state teacher registration. Its English criterion can be met through an eligible four-year English-medium study pathway or IELTS Academic with 7.0 in Reading and Writing and 8.0 in Speaking and Listening. AITSL extended IELTS validity to three years from 13 July 2026.
What does AITSL assess?
An AITSL skills assessment checks whether your qualifications and English language proficiency meet the criteria for your nominated teacher occupation for skilled migration. Before applying, confirm with the Department of Home Affairs whether your visa pathway requires the assessment.

AITSL's published test route specifies Academic IELTS. It does not accept another English test as a substitute for this criterion. Check the current application material for the Test Report Form and One Skill Retake conditions.
Can I meet the English requirement through study?
AITSL publishes a study option based on four full years of university-level study in Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States. The study must include a relevant initial teacher education qualification and meet AITSL's detailed conditions.
AITSL assessment vs teacher registration
A suitable AITSL migration skills assessment does not itself register you to teach. Registration is decided by the authority in the state or territory where you want to work.
