Many think that individuals should be the ones who look after the environment while others argue that the responsibility is the government’s alone. I personally believe that both governments and individuals need to work together to save the planet. This essay will discuss both views and explain my position.
On the one hand, individuals can take small steps to help protect the environment around them. They can consume less and choose environmentally friendly products. For example, consumers can make a decision to use less fossil fuels by walking or cycling instead of taking a bus or holidaying at home instead of flying abroad. Furthermore, they can select paper bags at the supermarket and drink from reusable bottles and cups instead of single-use plastic. Consequently, the individual’s carbon foot print starts to reduce and these small steps can lead to a larger movement.
On the other hand, government action is necessary to manage this international problem. Pollution travels across borders and global warming is a global environmental issue. Therefore, all the governments in the world must work together to protect planet Earth. Domestically, the government can help individual efforts by creating strict laws to ban products and actions which can damage the environment further. For instance, in Australia, the government introduced a law which forced supermarkets to stop giving customers single-use plastic bags. As a result, we all must bring our own reusable bags or we have to pay 15 cents for a reusable one from Woolworths or Coles which makes us think twice about it.
In conclusion, looking after the environment is everybody’s responsibility, individuals and governments. It will bring us a happy, healthy planet.
