Article Decision Tree
This is a separate tool to use after learning the article rules. It does not replace or change the Articles lesson.
What is the tree asking you to do?
The tree starts with four possible answers: a, an, the and Ø. The symbol Ø means that we use no article. At each step, you answer one grammar question and remove the answers that are no longer possible.
- Can you count the noun?Choose countable or uncountable.
- If it is countable, is it singular or plural?Singular means one. Plural means more than one.
- Is it specific?Choose specific when the listener or reader can identify exactly which noun you mean.
- If it is singular and not specific, listen to the first sound.Choose a before a consonant sound and an before a vowel sound.
Example: apple → countable → singular → not specific → vowel sound → an apple.
