PTE Answer Short Question: Format, Method and Common Mistakes

Learn how PTE Answer Short Question works, what it assesses, the most common mistakes and a practical preparation method.

Quick answer

PTE Answer Short Question is a listening task. You have 10 seconds to respond. The safest preparation is to understand the task rules, use a repeatable method and review the exact mistakes affecting your accuracy.

How PTE Answer Short Question works

Prompt: Audio 3–9 seconds. Skills assessed: Listening. Answer time: 10 seconds.

The question plays automatically and cannot be replayed. The microphone opens when the audio ends; there is no tone. Give one accurate word or a short phrase.

A practical preparation method

Listen for the question word and identify the category of answer required. Respond promptly with the shortest precise word or phrase that answers the question.

Answer immediately: A long pause can close the recording before you respond. Keep the answer short: Extra language earns no additional marks; accuracy is the goal.

The common mistake to avoid

Students often hesitate, give a long explanation or change a correct first answer because they think the response must be a complete sentence.

Practise a small number of attempts carefully, identify the repeated problem and correct that problem before increasing speed or volume.

What scoring information matters

Affects the listening score. Speaking delivery is not scored for this task. No credit for an incorrect or missing response.

Use official scoring information to understand the task, but use teacher feedback to identify the language or delivery habit that needs attention next.
