Quick answer

AVBC uses four English evidence pathways. If the test pathway applies, its current standard accepts in-person IELTS Academic 7 in every skill, OET 350/B in every skill, PTE Academic 65 in every skill, or TOEFL iBT 24 Listening, 24 Reading, 27 Writing and 23 Speaking. Registration is then handled by the veterinary board in the state or territory where you want to work.

Who is the authority?

Australasian Veterinary Boards Council (AVBC) for assessment and examination pathways; state and territory veterinary boards for registration.

Four English pathways

AVBC publishes primary-language, extended-education, combined secondary-and-tertiary education and English-test pathways.

Only in-person tests

AVBC says it does not accept online or at-home test versions. PTE and OET results must be made available to AVBC for verification.

Registration is jurisdictional

Veterinary Boards use AVBC's generally recognised qualifications list. If your qualification is not recognised, the AVE may be a route to registration.

Does AVBC accept PTE Academic?

Yes. The current test pathway requires 65 in each communicative skill, and the result must be made available to AVBC.

Is AVBC registration the same as state registration?

No. AVBC manages assessment and examination frameworks, while the relevant state or territory veterinary board grants registration.
