From 23 April 2026, the common test pathway includes IELTS Academic overall 7 with Listening 7, Reading 7, Writing 6.5 and Speaking 7, or the published equivalents. Education pathways may also apply. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice Board has its own standard, and health professions outside Ahpra use different authorities.

Who is the authority?
Ahpra and the relevant National Board regulate most listed professions; some allied-health professions use separate assessment bodies.
Accepted tests are controlled by the Boards
For tests taken on or after 23 April 2026, the common standard accepts specified test-centre versions of IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, OET, Cambridge C1/C2 and TOEFL iBT Australia. Do not use an at-home or online version unless the Board expressly permits it.
Two sittings can be possible
The common standard can accept a maximum of two sittings within 12 months when every sitting and component meets the published floor and combination rules.
Education evidence may avoid a test
School education, combined education, advanced education and test pathways have detailed country, language and recency conditions. An authority must decide whether your evidence satisfies the standard.
Registration or skills assessment vs visa English
Registration, a migration skills assessment and visa English are three different questions. Meeting one requirement does not automatically satisfy the others.

Do all health professions use Ahpra?
No. Dietitians, speech pathologists and medical laboratory scientists are examples of professions that may use other professional or skills-assessment bodies.
